The Woodlands is a city and master-planned community located almost 30 miles north of Houston to the west of Interstate 45. It mostly lies within Montgomery County, Texas, though a small part does lie within northern.  The population at 2014 is estimated to be over 107,000 people in an area of over 43 square miles.

The Woodlands began in the early 1970’s and was conconved and initially funded by George P. Mitchell – who founded Mitchell Energy. The master-planned community was intended to include golf course and single family homes along with a conference center, hotels and commercial development.  The land that the Woodlands was developed within was originally a lumber mill. In 1997, the planned development of the Woodlands was acquired by a real estate partnership. It then changed hands several times until the development became an incorporated city in 2007.

The Woodlands has grown to incorporate many different types of single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. It has both commercial office space and retail space. Many corporations both have their headquarters there or major offices. some of those companies include; Chevron Phillips, Huntsman Oil, Baker-Hughes, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, McKesson Corporation, Hewitt Associates and Maersk Line. With such a large number of companies calling The Woodlands home, office space is a premium. In the early 2000’s, over 1.5 million square feet of office space wa being constructed.

However, with the increase of oil and gas activity in Texas and the United States as a result of new development techniques, Anadarko plans to build a 31 story office tower, which will be the tallest office tower between Houston and Dallas on the Interstate 45 corridor.

In addition to office space, The Woodlands has plenty of retail and shopping. the largest area of shopping is the The Woodlands Mall. This mall is one of the largest in the Houston metro area and contains many national and local retailers. Included in the entertain area are movie theaters and over 150 restaurants. In addition to retailers, The Woodlands also contains neighborhood and cultural activities – many of them centered around the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
